Total Government Expenditure show us how much the whole government levels (federalstate and local) have spent. Some countries have the three levels, but not everyone This is not a problem to compare performance. It only tells us about how the state organizes itself

The total expenditure of a government is a big number. Itself alone doesn’t say much. When compared to Gross Domestic Product – GDP, which measures the value of all final goods and services produced in a specific time period, in a certain country,  it is possible to know how much of generated private income by families and enterprises is (re) distributed and redirected. It shows how much every society contributes from its own income to public expendings. We can also compare how much is spent on average with the entire society, dividing the public expenses amount by the population.

The information below was organized from OECD Statistics with 2017 data, the most recent disposable values. The national values from each country were standardized by Purchasing Power Parities (PPP), which are rates of currency conversion that try to equalise the purchasing power of different currencies, in this case through US Dollar.

We bring Total Government Expenditure, which means the sum of all government levels expenses: federal, state and local.

All the graphics and tables allow data download.

Among others, you will be able to see that the United States of America General Government have the biggest total value of public expenditures (US$ 7.9 trillions). However, the biggest proportion of GDP destined to public expenses happens in France (56.38%), and the biggest per capita value spent by a country lies in Luxembourg (US$ 48,374).
